After I moved my web site to WordPress, I kept finding pages where the external links did not work. Usually the pages that I linked to simply did not exist any more. Some of them were created by typos when I edited the page!
I researched “broken link” plugins for WordPress, and two popped up. The first one I tried is called Broken Link Checker. After I while, I noticed that my Local version of WordPress was ridiculously slow. Eventually I figured out that this happened after I activated the Broken Link Checker plugin. A little googling confirmed my suspicions.
The second plugin for WordPress is called AIOSEO Broken Link Checker plugin. It runs as an external service, so it doesn’t slow down my Local version of WordPress. But it is only free to use for checking 200 links – and my site has about 220 links. In addition, it incorrectly identified 14 broken links.
Now I did some Google searches, and got some useful information in r/Wordpress on Reddit:
The first suggestion is https://www.drlinkcheck.com
This allows you to check 1,500 links per month for free. But it quickly hit that limit on my web site. Apparently it counts EVERY image in EVERY photo album as a link!
The next suggestion is https://www.deadlinkchecker.com
These results look pretty good, but it incorrectly flagged several things as broken links.
The last suggestion is https://www.brokenlinkcheck.com/
This runs slower than the other two, but the results are correct – finally!
